about
Only five months after the release of their outstanding debut album, Joana Serrat, Matthew McDaid, Victor Partido and Roger Usart or, in other words, Riders Of The Canyon, release their new single on Tuesday, November 14th.
"Sunflower" is a cover of the song that opens "Things We Lost In The Fire", the album released by the American band Low in 2001.
Riders Of The Canyon explain the motivation that led them to record this song: "Throughout their career, Low have channelled many of our deepest emotions like no one else. In their beginnings, they knew how to slow down the storms of the soul, without losing any of their strength. Towards the end, they released them in wonderful noisy catharsis. Their vocal harmonies were the bait that sticks in our minds. Low will always be needed."
Recorded between Barcelona, Girona, Vic and London, Matthew McDaid takes the lead vocals here, seconded masterfully first by the angelic vocal accompaniment of Joana Serrat, and then by the beautiful and thrilling vocal harmonies created together with Victor Partido and Roger Usart.
In addition to vocal contributions, McDaid is playing acoustic guitar and 12-string acoustic guitar. Likewise, Serrat does the same with her characteristic Guild acoustic guitar, also taking on electric guitar, keyboards and drums; and Partido adds some superb rhythmic arrangements and a sensational fingerpicking with his acoustic guitar.
The song, produced by Joana Serrat and David Giménez, has been mixed by Grammy Award winner Ted Young (Kurt Vile, The Rolling Stones, Sonic Youth, Mercury Rev) and mastered by Jessica Thompson, American restoration engineer who works for Numero Group (Duster, Codeine) and who has mastered works by artists such as Woody Guthrie, Lou Reed, Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett.
lyrics
when they found your body
giant X's on your eyes
with your half of the ransom
you bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
sweet sunflowers
and gave them to the night
underneath the star of david
a hundred years behind my eyes
and with my half of the ransom
i bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
sweet sunflowers
and gave them to the night
sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers x 4
and gave them to the night
